Different guitar amplifiers do different things. For example, Marshalls are known for their powerful, stadium-rock, overdriven sounds, but to get cleaner sounds, such as jangle pop or trebly Stevie Ray Vaughan blues tones, you will need a Fender, Vox, or Roland Jazz Chorus.

Peavey, Randall and Mesa Boogie are well associated with heavy metal. Crate is known for making inexpensive, durable amps. My own personal vote goes to Vox, which is responsible for the sounds of The Beatles, Queen, The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, U2, Radiohead, Tom Petty, The Yardbirds, and Rory Gallagher. The Vox AC15 and AC30 are well known for having loud, clean sounds, with a famous "Top Boost" circuit.

=================================

Just as in anything in life there is no "best".
Just as jimi Hendrix was not better than pat metheny. Just different.
There are amps that excel better than others on certain things.
For Instance, To some Jazz guitar players there is nothing better than a Polytone. Others like Evans, Roland Jazz Chorus, Fender twin reverb and super reverb and many other amps.
Blues guys usually like Fender tweed deluxes and the blackface fenders such as the deluxe reverb (22 watts) , super reverb(40 watts) and even some silverface fenders. The early silverface super reverb amps are superior to the BF SR IMHO. (most will disagree).
Marshall is pretty much the sound of classic rock-especially JTM45's, Plexi's and the later JCM800 and 900.
On the other hand I have heard great players play thru a Peavey special and absolutely smoke. Scott Henderson of chick Corea/Tribal tech comes to mind. He used a Peavey for years and the tone was amazing.
Again, there is no best amp. People might say a Trainwreck or Dumble is the best but its not. It might be the most expensive but not the best.
The best amp is the right amp for the job. If I had a country gig where I wanted loud crystal clean tone with a telecaster I'd show up with a Fender twin reverb.
If I did a lot of newer country, beatles stuff or anything with chime like tom petty I'd have a Vox AC-30 or AC-15 or modern inspired amp like a DR-Z.
If the gig called for an archtop jazz guitar I'd use a polytone(think George Benson/Kenny Burrell)
If I wanted the Larry Carlton/Robben Ford sound I'd get something that was inspired by a dumble.
Just know there is no "best anything" and after a certain point the "law of diminishing returns"comes into effect.
You have to decide what you like the sound of and that is the "best amp".
Me? I have 4 amps that cover any gig I want to do.
A great simple rig that could cover any style would be a fender amp such as a early 70's super reverb(40 watts) and can be had for under 1,000. To that I would get a few good OD pedals. I'd get a simple clean boost and another OD/distortion pedal that has the flavor of your choosing. Starting with a great clean sound like a BF/SF Fender you could have a pedal for metal sounds (if you like that). There are some great blues pedals and some pedals that will give a fender 99% of the sound of a Vox.
So IMHO the best amp for most people would be an amp with a great clean sound that can be used as a platform to build your tone.
After 30 years of playing and 19 years of being a pro I can tell you without a doubt there is no best amp. My favorite amp for me is an amp called a Redplate. Its a guy in Phoenix that will build you a custom amp for way,way less$$$ than other brands.
I wanted an amp with a perfect fender deluxe reverb clean sound and a dumble ODS lead channel with a footswitchable gain boost. My idea of the best and yours may be entirely different.
Good luck chasing amps!

PS: another thing I
believe is that the amp is more important than the guitar in terms of tone. I can plug an $80 guitar into my amps and get awesome tone. You can plug a 59 les paul into a crappy amp and its going to sound bad!
