Cecil Sharp (1859-1924) taught, composed and recorded music, particularly folk music, but is not regarded as a song-writer.
The first professional songwriter in the US is widely considered to be D. Stephen Foster. He was active in the 19th century and is known for composing many popular songs of the time, including "Oh! Susanna" and "Camptown Races." Foster's work laid the foundation for American popular music and he became the first American to make a living solely from songwriting.
