At Woodstock in 1969, Johnny Cash performed "Ring of Fire." His rendition of the song, originally written by June Carter Cash and Merle Kilgore, became one of his signature pieces. Although he was not one of the main headliners, his performance contributed to the festival's legendary status.

You may be thinking of Richie Havens. He sang it at Woodstock. You can see a clip of it at http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x50xpk_richie-havens-freedom_music. I saw him perform a free concert in Brooklyn in the 80's and he was mesmerizing.
Country Joe McDonald sang "I-Feel-Like-I'm-Fixin'-To-Die Rag" at Woodstock, which is often referred to as the "One two three, what are we fighting for?" song at the festival.
