The original song was recorded by Aaron Neville in 1966 on the ParLo label, catalog number: 101, format: 7" 45 rpm. I found this info at http://www.secondhandsongs.com/song/92910

I was also looking for who originally recorded the song because I listened to it when it first came out but couldn't remember the name of the artist, but knew I listened to the original and that it was the first recording. It was a top hit for about a year where I listened to it in Brooklyn, NY. It was written by Lee Diamond and George Richard Davis.
