The expression figured prominently in the 1966 novelty song hit called They're Coming to Take Me Away Ha-Haaa! by a musician calling himself "Napoleon XIV" (actually Jerry Samuels, as per the Billboard book). The song describes the vocalist retreating into mental illness due to the fact that his lover abandoned him. It is done entirely in rhythmic recitation, with a constant march-style drumbeat in the background.

They're Coming to Take Me Away Ha-Ha

They're Coming to Take Me Away Ho-Ho, He-He, Ha-Ha

To the "Funny Farm", where life is beautiful all the time

And I'll be happy to see those nice young men in their clean white coats...

Check the lyrics...I believe it's referencing his pet dog, not a love that abandoned him. Hence this verse;

"I cooked your food, I cleaned your house, and this is how you pay me back

for all my kind unselfish loving deeds.. Huh??

Well you just wait, they'll find you yet and when they do they'll put you

in the ASPCA, you mangy mutt!!! And... "

The ASPCA, In case you're not sure, is The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals

Either way...it cracks me the heck up! :o)
