Elvis Presley. This controversial song was a big hit for ( The King) and is closer to country and western than rock. Elvis did a lot of C&W songs and like most of them this one is tragic. The unnamed lead character in the song- the Angry young man, apparently takes his own life- but the song is not l00% specific about this- ( as the crowd gathers round an angry young man, face down, in the street with a GUN in his hand, in the Ghetto!)- There is no mention of a gun battle, for example.- and no firearms sound-effects in the song. The song was written by Mac Davis- who also wrote the even more lugubrious ( sad) Don't Cry, Daddy. This deals with maternal mortality and not divorce as some suggested.- Follow the lyrics- the mother died in childbirth- that's my take.

In the Ghetto, a sickening biography of a child who first off is born, apparently to an unwed mother, grows up to be a juvenile delinquent ( Buys a Gun, he steals a car, he tries to run, but he don"t get far... then it jumps An His Momma cries. The lead character is never mentioned by name, but is obviously a male. Song was recorded by both Mac Davis ( who wrote it) and Elvis Presley, who performed it. We never learn the name of the lead character. There is some mystery about this but it seems most likely ( there is no talk of a gun battle, for example) he takes his own life in the end- As the crowd gathers round an angry young man, face down in the street, with a GUNN ( Presley emphasizes the word Gun) in his hand, in the Ghetto! a sick and sordid song with no redeeming qualities.
