Buffy dies in the final episode of season 1 for a brief moment before she is revived. She then dies again at the end of the final season 5 episode, "The Gift", sacrificing her life for her "sister" and the rest of the world. She stays dead presumably for a few months, until her friends decide to resurrect her ... despite knowing there may be dire consequences.
