ABBA originated the "wall of sound" recording technique, involving close harmony and lots of overdubbing. As practically all of their work was harmony, there was no lead singer as such. Both Agnetha Fältskog and Anni-Frid Lyngstad took the lead in various solos.

It was probably one of ABBA's defining characteristics that they had no principal lead singer: All four of the band's main members sang lead at some point.

The two guys in the band, Bjorn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson, had been working together since 1966, with Bjorn generally singing lead. When soprano Agnetha Faltskog and mezzo soprano Anni-frid Lyngstad began working with them in 1969, the girls performed backup but it soon became clear that ABBA sounded best when the women took the lead. However, Bjorn continued to sing lead on at least one track on every ABBA album. Andersson only sang lead on one ABBA track (an early number called "Suzie Hang-Around").

Of ABBA's top 40 single releases, Ulvaeus sang lead on five of them, Lyngstad on seven, Faltskog on 11 and the remainder had no lead singer, with two or four voices throughout.
