A typical recording contract pays the artist per record sold. I am not sure what the rate is today, but in the 1990s .25 or twenty-five cents per record sold, was pretty standard. So a Platinum record meaning 1 million copies sold, might gross $15 million dollars. But the Artist take would only be $250,000. The artist might make additional, if he were also the songwriter, composer, producer etc., That's why they so often end up in financial straights. The Press says they made $15 million and like everyone else they believe it until time comes to pay bills!
