Interestingly, the vast majority of the top songs of the 1950s on the country charts (then called "Country and Western") were sung by men. Some country vocal groups, like the Browns, had a woman in the group, but solo women were not the big hit-makers of that era. There were, however, a few exceptions-- several women who consistently had hits throughout much of the 1950s. One of the biggest was Kitty Wells, and the other was Jean (short for Imogene) Shepard. Later in the 50s, you can also see hits by Patsy Cline and Brenda Lee on the charts.
