this would mean playing the note that represents the whole note and then if the dotted quarter is the same pitch just simply sustain that note for the duration of the dotted quarter without releasing the note in between.

What has a dotted note that has three beats?

a dotted half note gets three beats. a "dot" adds half of the value of the note...for example half the value of a half note is one beat...so add that to the half note to get 3 beats

How many beats does a whole note tied to a half note tied to a quarter note get?

A whole note tied to a half note tied to a quarter note gets seven beats.

Dotted whole and dotted quarter note?

A beat is the basic rhythmic unit of music. For more information, ask another question (one could ask a musically knowledgeable person in the flesh, as this is very basic musical knowledge).A dotted quarter note and an eighth note are worth two (2) beats together, with hits (notes starting) on the downbeat (beat 1) and the "and" (second half) of beat 2.If you are counting half notes (each half of each beat), then a dotted quarter note would last for three counts. If counting aloud, it would last while one counts "1 + 2" (one-and-two). The eighth note would then last when you count the "and" or + of beat 2.The top two cards in the image show a dotted quarter note plus and eighth note. The first two bottom cards (when reading left to right) show a quarter note and pair of eighth notes. The quarter note and the first eighth note are tied (with orange). The tie means to hold tone duration (or not to strike/hit on an instrument again) for the added values of the tied notes. The quarter note and eighth note tied are worth 1.5 beats - the same as a dotted quarter note. Therefore, in regards to the note values:dotted quarter note + eighth note = quarter note tied with eighth note + eighth note

What does it mean when a dot is placed after any musical note?

When there is a dot after a note it means that you add on half of the note's value, for example, a note that lasts for one beat without a dot will have a value of one and a half beats with a dot.

How many crotchet equal a semibreve tied to a dotted minim?

Semibreves cannot be tied to dotted minims. In any case, a semibreve is worth 4 crotchets and a minim is worth 2, but a dot adds half the value of the note to the note, so a dotted minim is worth 3. The answer to your question is 7 crotchets but it is not possible.

How does a dot written after a note affect its length?

A dot after a note adds half of the given value/length so a crotchet (1 beat) with a dot after it is essentially a crotchet tied to a quaver (½ beat) or 1 and a ½ crotchets. A minim (2 beats) with a dot is 3 beats long.

Can a dotted quarter not fall on beat four of a measure?

Yes and no. In 4/4 the note with the greatest value that can begin on beat 4 is a quarter note. Now that quarter note could be tied to an 8th note to start the new measure which would be the same length as a dotted quarter but technically not the same. However a dotted quarter could begin on beat 4 in a different time signature. Think 5/4. Try it!

What is 3 semiquavers tied together?

The duration of three tied semiquavers is equivalent to a dotted quaver.

Explain what a dot after a note does to the value of the note?

A dot beside the note adds one half of the note value to itself. For instance, in 4/4 time a half note equals 2 beats, but with a dot beside the note it would become equal to 3 beats. Another example is a whole note in 4/4 time. The whole note would be equal to 4 beats, but with a dot, it would become equal to 6 beats.
