A prophecy has told Aeneas that he must visit the Cumaean Sibyl (a prehistoric oracular priestess who lived in a cave near modern Naples) and persuade her to escort him into Hell where he will meet his dead father Anchises. Anchises in turn will tell Aeneas secrets about the future of Rome.
The actual reason why Aeneas visits the underworld is so that Vergil can give Anchises a prophecy which foretells the future greatness of Rome, and particularly what a wonderful reign the emperor Augustus will have. (Augustus was emperor at the time that the Aeneid was composed).

Aeneas traveled to the underworld in Virgil's "Aeneid" guided by the Sibyl of Cumae. She led him to the entrance of Hades, where he performed rituals and offered sacrifices to gain passage. After receiving a golden bough as a token, they descended through the gates of the underworld, encountering various souls and realms, ultimately seeking guidance from his deceased father, Anchises.
The Sybll is a prophetess to the god Apollo. She tells Aeneas about his fate. She tells him that he must lay his city in the land where he finds a white sow suckling thirty white piglets. She also leads Aeneas through the Underworld to visit his father Anchises.
Anchises told Aeneas that he would be the ancestor to a line of people that would rule the world (otherwise known as the Romans) In the Underworld, Anchises showed Aeneas some of his people, pointing each out and telling of their accomplishments.
It was on his way to where his mother (Venus) told him he must go... and to attempt to placate Juno at her temple there. Ironically, one of the major reasons Juno wanted him dead was that his descendents (ie, the Romans) were destined to destroy Carthage, her favored city.
