My guess would be that the cords could possibly slip if the varnish was too smooth. If the wood has more grooves, perhaps it is more likely to hold the cords and help them vibrate.

Your guess would be wrong. Varnishing the bridge would slow down the transmission of sound through the hard maple the bridge is made from. Even build up of rosin dust slows down the vibrations.

Well, the violin shouldn't be broken, the bridge may be. But, in any matter you can get replacement bridges. The violin shouldn't beak because the bridge rests on the violin. It stays in place due to the pressure of the strings. You can just slide a new one right in. ------- Sometimes a bridge will pop off during tuning, if it isn't cracked or warped it can be put back on. If the sound post has fallen, the strings should not be tightened until tge post is fixed by a professional. Bridges warp if they are not regularly straightened after tuning.
