Why did Mark David Chapman kill John Lennon?

Because Lennon was due to win his U.S. citizenship a few months later, and they needed to eliminate the chance that Lennon would have joined the opposition to their murderous counterrevolutionary wars in Central America (esp. some officials think Chapman was being brainwashed in a way, that someone or some organization was convincing him about weird thoughts and ideals. The Catcher in The Rye is about an insane character, too and has some strange ideas that would promote the shooting in a way, so perhaps Chapman needed assurance from the book that he was doing the "right" thing in his mind

The book deals with issues that Chapman suffered from and could relate to such as teenage angst, complex issues of identity, belonging, connection, and alienation. Because of his insanity, Chapman may have thought he WAS the character in the book, as proven by Mark David Chapman's shooting of John Lennon (Chapman was arrested with his worn copy of the book, and inside, he had scribbled a note: This is my statement, From Holden Caufield.)
