Great question.

Complicated answer as there are so many reasons including;

Priscilla and Elvis were married on May 1, 1967 and nine months later Lisa Marie Presley was born. In 1968 Elvis music career was "re-started" and began touring from 1969 through his death (sadly) in 1977. Being a Mother, to Lisa Marie, Priscilla wanted to provide Lisa Marie with stability and that does not lend itself if she opted to join her husband either in California or during his time touring throughout the United States.

Elvis was contractually obligated to star in motion pictures, averaging 3 per year, which took place in California. Hence, Elvis lived part-time in Memphis Tennessee and part-time in California.

Both Elvis, and Priscilla, have admitted that during thier marriage they (a) had strong feelings for other people and (b) had relationships with some of the people.

Priscilla actually informed Elvis that she was leaving him in 1972.

Priscilla agreed to let Elvis actually file the divorce papers and their divorce was finalized on October 8, 1973.

Up until the last day of Elvis' life he loved Priscilla, and she loved him, and they both loved and raised their only daughter Lisa Marie Presley.

Even though Elvis "officially" filed for divorce from Priscilla she made the decision to physically leave Elvis.

Elvis questioned "is there another man" and he was, and continued to be throughout his lifetime, devastated/heart broken/angry/etc. about the break up of his marriage.

Initially she was introduced to Elvis while he was in the US Army in Germany in 1960. She was the daughter of a military man also stationed in Germany (i.e. she grew up believing he was her biological father but technically he was her "step father") at the time.

Priscilla was "discovered" by a friend of Elvis' at the time. Soon after Elvis disassociated himself from this friend as he didn't like some of the comments, and acts, of this "friend" towards Priscilla.
