Beethoven wrote the Moonlight sonata for his love, Countess Giulietta Guicciardi, who was 16 and beautiful, and one of his piano students.

Beethoven himself did NOT create that name. In his lifetime, it was simply Piano Sonata No. 14. The title came about in the 1830s from a music critic named Rellstab, a few years after Beethoven died.
