In "City of Glass," Jace brings Simon through the portal to Idris primarily to protect him and ensure his safety. Simon, being a mundane, is vulnerable in the dangerous circumstances surrounding the conflict between the Shadowhunters and Valentine. Jace feels a sense of responsibility for Simon, as he is Clary's best friend, and wants to keep him close while navigating the perilous situation in Idris. Additionally, he hopes that being in Idris will help Simon understand the world Clary is part of.

There were originally three books. It was a trilogy. However, Cassandra Clare has since announced that the final series will be composed of six books. 1. City of Bones 2. City of Ashes 3. City of Glass 4. City of Fallen Angels 5. City of Lost Souls 6. City of Heavenly Fire Cassandra Clare is also currently working on a new series that is still based on nephilim but is different. The new series is called The Infernal Devices, and -as of yet- will be a trilogy.
