Marconi wanted to prove to his dad that he could send radio wave from England to newfound land pay waves.

Guglielmo Marconit thought that it was important to invent the radio because it was an important attribute to the American culture and our history.
We should be careful here. Marconi did not invent "the radio" in the sense that we use the word today: He invented something called the radiotelegraph---a practical application of a phenomenon discovered by Heinrich Hertz. Marconi did it because he thought he could make a lot of money. This turned out to be a good idea because he did, in fact, make quite a lot of money off it.
