I don't know why it was written but the people who wrote it was my grandfather George Kuppler & A friend of his but I can't remember his name.They co wrote the song during WW1 while stationed in Georgia.My grandfather wrote the tune & his friend wrote the lyrics.They sold the song to A man named Burnie & I think his first name was Ben?He paid them $100.00 for the song & they split the money.I'm not sure who made the song famous by selling it to the Harlem Globe Trotters.It has been recorded & sung by many well known talent.
