Mostly for political reasons. It wasn't actually true, but it was close enough to the truth to stick: it wasn't Jackson who was the bigamist, it was his wife who had been... technically.

Jackson's wife Rachel had been married to a Captain Robards. The two separated and Robards moved out of the area. It was widely believed (and certainly by both Rachel and Jackson) that he had divorced Rachel.

Jackson then married Rachel. However, after a couple of years she received notice that her divorce had finally become official, meaning that she had still been officially married to Robards at the time of her marriage to Jackson and therefore that the marriage to Jackson was invalid.

Jackson then remarried Rachel so that there could be no doubt that the two were now officially man and wife, but there was a period during which she had been technically guilty of bigamy. There probably wasn't any fraudulent intent on anyone's part and no one was prosecuted, but Jackson was a lawyer and really should have known better than to rely on hearsay evidence of the divorce.
