it was given to him by a rappernamed Black Walt while looking though a gun magazine (tec 9 a fully auto smg). Yates later applied a deeper meaning to the name, claiming that it stands for the complete technique of rhyme, with 'tech' meaning technique and 'nine' representing the number of completion

∙ 12y agoBecause when he first wanted to rap he went to rapper Black Walt wanting to rap..he and his friends laughed at him until he spit a flow en started beating on his chest and was rapping fast and Black Walt was blown away so him and Tech N9ne went through a gun magazine and on the last page Black Walt saw a Tec-9 and he said "my Tec-9 be shooting fast as hell when i pull it so we gonna call you Tec-9 for your speed of rapping" they just spelled it different know as TECH N9NE
