Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey had a volcanic case of sibling rivalry. Both were very successful but their personalities were reversed from the standard stereotypes about birth order. Jimmy was older but more easy-going, while Tommy was a hard-driving perfectionist. They actually broke up the band in 1935 over the simple matter of how fast to play a particular song.

The reason they broke up is not totally clear. It seems that their relationship became increasingly stressed until it blew up at the John Wayne Theater at Knott's Berry Farm in Buena Park, California, on July 14, 1973. Phil smashed his guitar and stalked off stage, leaving Don to announce the duo's obvious breakup.

Frank Sinatra used the bands as a step towards his solo career. It was an era of big bands and a singer could not simply be popular. ( There are always exceptions, like Bing Crosby) Frank Sinatra had to join bands as singer in order to be recognised. When he was with Tommy Dorsey, he became super popular and he was done with Dorsey. Working with Tommy Dorsey was never meant to last long.
