I am not sure if you mean "girlfriend" or girl who is a friend, so I will explain the reasons men assign nicknames in general:

1) A Sign of Acceptance. When you are accepted as a member of a group, they will generally find something to call you other than your own name. This is group bonding at its most basic.

2) Mild Insults: Men insult each other as a form of bonding. Most women I know think this is insane, but it is how men have always worked. Nicknames often contain a hint of insult, and this is intended not to offend you, but as a friendly gesture. He thinks you are a close enough friend to take a little ribbing.

3) Secret Handshake: If you and a man had a shared experience that was intensely funny/romantic/scary, he may assign a nickname that would not make sense to anybody else but will make sense to the two of you. This is a way of sharing without getting all emotional about things. When given a name by a boyfriend, it is usually for this reason.

4) As a Medal of Honor: If you have done something particularly impressive or funny, a man may bestow a nickname on you that is based on this event.
