That's generally because the `front end' of the receiver is designed to be more sensitive than home receivers. This is mainly because the unit is almost always under varying conditions and with a higher sensitivity, it's able to provide a cleaner, more solid reception. This is partly due to the short length of the antenna that cars have and also because designers have responded to customer's complaints over the years that the car radios weren't able to pick up a station without fading out under bridges and when surrounded by large buildings.
