Several Reasons:
- To allow the songs to be licensed for Film and TV use, without the record company (who owns the rights to the original recording) being paid - more revenue for the artist.
- For greater radio airplay. Many radio stations won't put old songs on their playlist - some people will switch off when an 'old sounding' song is played. A re-recording with modern production 'sheen' would more likely get on the playlist as it would appeal to fans of the original artist and wouldn't be a turn-off for casual listeners. Every time a song is played on the radio royalties go to the artist and songwriter so the more plays the better.
- For a better royalty rate. The original songs may have been recorded earlier in an artists career, when they were on an unfavourable recording contract. Re-recording them later on may give them a better percentage.
