They would then place the records on one of a pair of turntables and use a monitoring circuit on the mixer to find the beginning of one track whilst the other record was playing. They would then select jingles and adverts from a selection of endless loop tape cartridge.
These days all music is selected by computer to fit in with the stations desired output. The computer also selects the ad breaks and jingles by following a predetermined algorithm. All that's left for the DJ to do is think of something interesting to say between the tracks.
