There could be any number of reasons to use flutter tongue (growling noise effect) on the Euphonium. In all honesty, it depends on the composer and the situation. In jazz-type songs, like George Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue, it's mostly used as decoration. In some classical songs, like Frank Tichelli's Angels in the Architecture, it's used to build tension and angst. Most of the time, though, Trombonists are the ones who are asked to use flutter tongue. The mellow sound of the Euphonium doesn't generally suit itself for the biting, growling tone of the flutter tongue.
