A lot of times what happens is that the speaker diaphragms are distorting or reaching the end of their flex distance. It could also be loose wires. Another thing I noticed is you can get dust and crud in the volume knob. The knob is connected to a potentiometer and if dirt gets in the potentiometer you'll hear pops at certain volume levels. You could try to take it apart and clean it or just don't turn it up so loud.
