In order to play crisp, full notes like they should sound, you have to use a lot more air than you normally do for medium-pitch notes. If you use only a small amount of weak air, the Saxophone will either squeak or play the note that is one octave (row) higher.

∙ 14y agoThat would happen to me with my alto sax. The reason is normally you might've accidentally pressed another key that would cause it to squeak or it might just need to get a little checkup at your local band store. For me it needed a checkup they gave me a rental while mine was being fixed and when it came back the squeaking stopped.

∙ 13y agoyour saxophone squeaking can be a number of problems on your saxophone. first off, your reed may be to dry; your mouth may not be on the mouth piece far enough, and and/or a key or spring may be loose or misplaced. hope this helps.

∙ 14y agoIt could mean one of three things --Your not blowing warm enough air, you have a bad reed, or you could have an air leak in your sax.
Try blowing warm air into your saxophone. Don't tense up so much. Keep your mouth in an 'O' shape while you blow without loosing contact with the reed. The warmer the air stream, the better the sound. Also! Don't be afraid of the note. Go ahead and blow strongly. It might take a little practice but you'll get it!
You could also have a bad reed. Is your reed chipped? Did you just get a new one? Make sure their are not cracks and that you've warmed up on your reed before hand. Also, if it is a new reed make sure it's not 'dead'. There are some reeds that freshly come out of the box but still just don't play right. Also, are you using a good brand of reed? Or the right strength for your level? These could all affect how you play and how any note, not just low, come out.
But, if this continues to be a problem their might be an actually problem with the saxophone. Try to do a scale or just play other notes. Do they come out squeaky or does it sound like air is coming out where it shouldn't be? If so, your saxophone might have an air leak causing it not to respond properly. This could be do to a bad pad or a bent key. If you feel that this may be the problem get it to your instructor or a local music shop to be fixed.

∙ 9y agoThere are several reasons that a saxophone will squeak rather than play the correct note. Blowing too hard will produce squealing, try not blowing so hard. Your reed could be too hard, try a softer reed. There could be a leak in a key or in the register key and may need to be adjusted by a music instrument technician.
