Found out a wire was broken that wouldn't allow a relay to work. Repaired wire and vehicle starts again - like new!

My jeep has the same problem (1998 xj) and a mechanic told me that you have to remove the tranmission pan to get to it, its up inside the transmission and if your goin to rep[lace it you might as well change your filter while your at it.

You have to remove the transmission pan or just take it to a shop and they can suck out the old and refill it fairly reasonable. The reason being is that even if you take the pan off the filter is inside the transmission and cant be changed.
Something inside the transmission is slipping. To try to avoid the cost of a transmission overhaul try having the transmission fluid and filter changed. You could also try some transmission additive but eventually it will have to be repaired.
