Most orchestras employ multiple percussionists. They, however, do have to learn a multitude of skills. Reading both treble clef ( bells, xylo, etc.) and bass clef ( timpani), is important, as well as learning specific techniques for many different drums and hand held instruments, like tambourine, sleigh bells, maracas, castanets, etc. Also, depending on the repertoire, you might also have to learn how to play drum kit which is fairly difficult.
