The Saxophone was originally popular in chamber music, because it was so easy to learn. When the fad died out, dozens of instruments were taken to resale shops and pawnbrokers, where they were purchased by people who couldn't afford more expensive instruments or lessons. The poorer classes identified with blues and other roots music, which evolved into jazz.
