Why is Whitney Houston important to history?

It's not clear that she did anything to change history. Whitney Houston was a popular singer and actress who had a number of hits during the 1980s and early 1990s. One of her songs, "I Will Always Love You," was #1 for 13 weeks. Sadly, she died too young, and drug abuse contributed to her death. But while her fans loved her, it is probably not true that she changed history, since there were many other singers and actresses before her (including a number of women of color) who had big hits or starred in popular movies.

She really didn't change it. In fact, few popular singers or movie stars can change an entire community, no matter how famous they are. But in Whitney Houston's case, she did make an impact, although perhaps in a negative way. At one point, she seemed to have everything-- fame, money, a beautiful daughter, many hit songs, millions of fans. But unfortunately, all the money she made did not make her happy; she became addicted to drugs and alcohol, was unable to sustain her career success, and she died very young.

There are lessons to her life and death, and one is that being rich and famous is no guarantee that you will be happy or have peace of mind. But as popular as she was in the 1980s and early 1990s (when she had a number of hit songs), it would not be accurate to say she changed the African-American community. Rather, people had loved and admired her, and many were very disappointed at how her life turned out.

If we are thinking of black history as the study of black people who were important doctors, or lawyers, or educators, or inventors, or civil rights leaders, or even athletes, then it's not clear that Whitney Houston contributed anything. There had been many successful black singers since the beginning of Pop Music; she had great talent and a wonderful voice, and in the 1980s and early 1990s, she had some #1 songs. But she was not unique, and I don't know if we can say she was an important figure in black history. She is certainly worth remembering because she was a popular entertainer, and had a great deal of success before dying too young as a result of drug abuse. But I am not convinced that she was a trail-blazer or an innovator, and those are the kinds of people most often remembered when studying black history.
