Yes the recorder is a musical instrument. Historically it is made out of wood. There are plastic versions as well. In either wood or plastic there are good models and there are terrible models. The name "recorder" is also used for any apparatus that is used to record a record of sound, activity, energy, etc... and some of these are the tape recorder, the voice recorder, or even earth quake movement recorder.
