it's very important for the simple reason of its rich history. Alternative rock and its predecessors are what dominated the very essence of American an European culture. It's the ultimate expression of individualism and freedom of choice, instead of conforming to what society wants you to listen to. It it deep in its message and rhythmic background, talking about major issues that affect the world. It's basically real, authentic music.
