Brass is a rust-resistant metal compound that was relatively easily and inexpensively obtained by our ancestors, polishes easily, is malleable and has interesting musical properties at various thicknesses. Brass is comparatively light-weight compared to the other metals historically available.

It should be noted that in modern times saxophones have been made of other materials, namely fiberglass. These instruments do not have the same tonal qualities as brass saxophones, and so are not widely used for anything other than training.
