George Harrison met John Lennon through their mutual friend, Paul McCartney. George and Paul had met at the Liverpool Institute, which was the city's best school for boys at the time. Although Paul was a year older than George, and John a year older than Paul, they became acquaintances through their interest in music. At the time, Paul and John were in a skiffle band called The Quarrymen. An enthusiastic guitarist, George had repeatedly asked to play in the band, but John had always denied him, insisting that he was too young. On one occasion, however, George did sit in for the band's guitarist, who was sick.
Their nickname for themselves was the Fab Four ("fab" short for "fabulous"); they were sometimes called "the Fabs" by their staff at Apple Corps. George Harrison recalled the name in his 1987 song "When We Was Fab".
