The best reason for analyzing media is that it will help you to become "media literate"-- able to think about what is being presented to you, rather than just believing whatever some famous talk show host, athlete, or celebrity said. Among the questions a media literate person might ask are these: why do the mainstream media choose to cover certain stories (and issues) but ignore others? Why do they focus on certain people but not pay much attention to others? Do the media accurately report the news or do they have certain biases? Do advertisers have any influence on what the media report (or fail to report)?

A media literate person also asks about "framing": what was included in the story, and what was intentionally left out? The more you know about the media, the more you will be able to use and enjoy it responsibly, and not be fooled or manipulated. To help you with media analysis, I enclose a link to a famous set of question you should be asking yourself when you watch, read or listen to news, as well as when you encounter commercials, celebrity testimonials, and claims made by politicians.
