Disney owned her and tried to get her to be someone she wasn't so she just said "you know what, forget it." Now she's who she wants to be, singing songs like Can't be Tamed and posting music videos that allow her to look and dress however she wants. I wouldn't necessarily call her a "hero", but she's pretty close.
