It is not entirely clear that she is "important," although certainly she was popular and had millions of fans while she lived. From the mid 1980s through the early 1990s, she had a number of major hit records, including one song that remained number one for an amazing thirteen weeks ("I Will Always Love You"). She also was in several popular movies, including "The Bodyguard." Sadly, she died young, as a result of her addictions to drugs and alcohol, and her death does send an important message-- being rich and being a celebrity doesn't guarantee happiness.
