Back in those days, when a baby was born prematurely, it was standard practice to place the infant in an incubator and give oxygen, since the baby's lungs had not fully developed and this was supposed to help the baby to breathe. Unfortunately, Stevie was given too much oxygen and it damaged a portion of his eyes, leaving him blind. Today, we know much more about how to address the medical needs of premature infants, and such a thing would be much less likely to occur.
