Why was Toccata and Fugue in D minor written?

For much the same reasons as the rest of Johann Sebastian Bach's compositions were: to earn a living, basically, and give the rest of the world the opportunity to enjoy all of his compositions.

It's unlikely that JS Bach wrote this piece that has been attributed to him. It is unlike any of his other compositions in style and, well, quality.

Bach composed his Fugue in G Minor because he needed to. He was being paid to produce a piece that could be played for a specific reason.

He wrote it for the same reason as his other 23 preludes and fugues in his Well Tempered Clavier. The purpose was to have one in each of the 12 major and corresponding minor keys.
