because he lost his sense of hearing He was beaten by his father and he thought the woman he loved didn't love him anymore and left. When what the truth is, is that she never got the letter he wrote her when his caraige broke down in the rain and she left thinking he had lost his interest and love for her. She was his "Immortal Beloved"

Beethoven was suffering from hearing problems which ultimately led to deafness. Due to that fact he was becoming unable to give concerts or to conduct.

In a letter to his brother he is describing his deafness which pretty much answers your question. This letter is often referred as 'Heiligenstädter Testament'

Academics like to debate the reasons, but I do believe lead poisoning was the cause. What is not known precisely is the source of Pb, which was peculiar to LVB more so than the general population.
