Why was the guitar made?

String instruments have been being used for YEARS. Honestly, I think it's impossible to tell where, because no-one can be sure how long ago they were being used (whether the 6 strings like we see today, or older forms.

As for why? Well, why are any instruments made? To make music. =]

Bands began to perform to larger and larger audiences. The acoustic guitar could not produce a sound loud enough to hear, even with microphones, which could distort it. Also Rock Bands wanted a new kind of sound.
