The Marriage of Figaro was successful because

Beaumarchaiswrote a play that worked onstage and that had themes of love, revenge, passion, compassion in the lives of believable, reality based people;

because Lorenzo De Ponte transformed that play into an Opera that had phrases to be put to music, that kept the story line moving from one compelling episode to another; and because Mozart's operatic genius combined the words and story and gave us music that survives and will survive.
