In medieval education, dialectic was the study of logic, debate, questioning and argument. This was considered to be absolutely crucial in education - the ability to raise questions and argue for or against a particular idea (always in Latin) was the basis of learning.

Masters debated with students for long periods, both in and outside the classroom. An early example of this is the 11th century manuscript Colloquy by Aelfric, which was not only a means of helping students learn Latin, but formed an example of conversation and debate on a wide range of topics.

When the 12th century observer, scholar and writer Alexander Neckham travelled to Paris to study at the university there, he noted that on the many bridges over the river Seine there were seats provided for masters and students to continue their dialectic debates in the fresh air after class was over.
