It is on the same circuit as the brake lights, but if they are not working, and the bulbs are good your switch needs cleaning or adjustment.
Attempt this first since the switch costs nearly $300 bucks.
On the passengers side of the trans just behind the bell housing there is a fan shaped switch, loosen the 12mm bolt ( smaller of the two, and rotate the switch while a friend checks the lights. this problem is usually accompanied by an occasional inability to start the vehicle, but can be cured by jiggling the shifter.
While adjusting the switch make sure that the vehicle will start in park as well, remember to block the wheels while testing the back up lights, engine off, key in run but not start, shifter in reverse, move switch until lights come on.
Once you find this spot, hold it in place and have your helper check to make sure it will start. This may take several tries to get both working correctly.
If you have no luck the switch may be dirty, this happens a lot. Hold the post to the bottom large bolt still while you loosen the nut, then remove it, then remove the 12mm adjusting bolt on top, remove the wire connector and pull the switch away, remove the bolts on the switch and separate the halves, use electrical contact cleaner and maybe some q-tips to clean all the copper connections completely apply di-electric grease and reassemble, refit to the trans and readjust so all functions work, this switch controls back up and start safety.
Caution! always hold that bottom bolt while tightening the large nut, this is connected to the gear adjuster and you could damage the internals if it isn't secured while you do it.
I would check the wires just behind the light. I had the same problem and the wires were broken a little just wiggle them as the lights are on.
ANSWER: The light socket is bad. They eventually will burn up if you keep replacing the bulbs like you are doing now. Go get the revised light socket from the dealership and you will be good. I have checked all bulbs and wiring in the rear, but the light keeps coming on rear lamp failure, is it a bad ground? if, so where will I look for it.
By the nature of the question I assume that you are referring to the tail lights and brake lights. My Explorer has four bulbs. Tail, brake turn and backup. They are all in separate compartments of the light assembly. So it could be that you have just burned out one bulb. If you are referring to the upper brake light in the rear window or at the top of the tailgate, same thing. One or more bulbs are burned out. I see people driving all the time with both lower lights burned out and the top working or visa versa.
I hope this helps, I would take a calculated guess that it is strictly a safety factor (in an emergancy on the highway if your foot is on the brake you are less likely to be rear ended) and if this is indead true, than it is wired to the battery independent of your starter switch If the brake lights are staying on even with your foot off the brake, it may be that the switch controlling the brake lights is broken. Beware; this can drain the battery.
If dash and parking lights do not work - check the fusesMay also be a bad headlight switchThe tail lights and brake lights on my 2002 would not work at the same time. Had to replace whole tail light assembly. Was told problems with jeeps-the circuit boards in older jeeps overheat and short out.
Did you check the light bulbs? If OK, probably a bad reverse light switch in tranny.
Reverse light switch bad or out of adjustment.
u have a short in ur wireing.
Repair or replace your reverse, neutral safety switch.
The reverse wire on the side of trans mite have came off or you may have afalty reverse switch on trans or a bad ground from bolbes.
Check the light bulbs themselves. Check the fuse. If those are good I would probably guess the neutral safety switch has gone bad
Check the tail light bulbs. These bulbs do double duty. Thet are both the tail light & the brake light. Tail light part might be burnt out.
Bad bulbs? Blown fuse? Bad switch?
E14 Light bulbs have an advantage over traditional light bulbs. They are designed using LED lights. These lights emit more light (making them brighter) and energy efficient capable of reducing your total energy costs when compared to traditional light bulbs.
There is probably a reverse light switch on the transaxle that is bad or unplugged
First check the bulbs and sockets with a 12v tester, if there is no current going to the bulbs then I would look to the back-up light switch as the problem. This should be on your transmission with a small wire harness coming from it. I hope this helps you. Mark
Either the bulbs are burned out or the switch that activates them is not working. Also maybe a bad fuse
