Saxaphones are classified as woodwind instruments.
The saxophone. While the instrument itself is commonly made of brass, the mechanics of it, as well as the use of a reed, make it a woodwind.
Traditionally woodwind instruments were all made out of wood obviously! Oboes, clarinets, bassoons and cor anglais' are all still made out of wood but other instruments in the 'woodwind' family (flutes, saxophones, piccolos) are now made out of metal so are considered near relations to the 'main' woodwind instruments.
That would be the flute. The flute is made of metal, but it was originally made of wood.
Tubas are made of metal, frequently brass, hence the name "brasswind" (trumpets, trombones, tubas, etc). This is as opposed to "woodwind" (like flutes and clarinets)

The main difference between woodwind and brass instruments is the material they are made of. Brass instruments, on the other hand, are made of brass and produce sound by vibrating the player's lips against a mouthpiece.
