What happened the CALEB, the former rock band you were in?

Caleb: Nothing really we just changed the name from Caleb to Colony House. We felt like with our first full length record coming out it would be nice to start with blank canvas.

Who came up with the name Colony House and what's the story behind it?

Caleb: We all decided on it together. When we started the band 4 years ago Scott, our guitarist, moved from Murfreesboro to Franklin to be closer for rehearsals. Will and Scott moved into the apartment complex my wife (fiancé at the time) just moved out of. The apartment complex was called Colony House Apartments. It felt fitting because it was such a significant time in the life of this band... That being the beginning of it.

Who's on the cover of your new album When I Was Younger?

Caleb: A friend of ours we met not too long ago. I was in downtown Franklin for a festival with my wife when a little boy and his older brother wandered up to us out of curiosity. Me and my wife waved pleasantly, nodding to their mom who was keeping an eye on them from behind. The next day I was thinking about how perfect the older brother would have been for the album cover. I asked my wife if she had any idea of how to track down this family... It turned out that the mother of the two boys had gone to the same high school as me and my wife. So long story short... I found her on Facebook and messaged her asking if she would be cool with me doing a photo shoot with her boy. She was rad about the whole thing and met me the next day with him. I snapped the photo on an old point and shoot film camera I bought for 75 bucks, got the film developed at Walgreens, then sent it to the label to see what they thought. And voila album art.

Have you received any feedback from fans for "Silhouettes" and "Second Guessing Games," the new singles featured on When I Was Younger?

Scott: As of this moment we have only released "Silhouettes" to radio as a single. "Second Guessing Games" is available on Spotify and iTunes. We've gotten a lot of good feedback from live audiences about the song. It may be my favorite to play live. "Silhouettes" is currently going for adds on Alt Rock radio stations all over the country and it's super exciting to hear great buzz around the song. It recently debuted on Sirius XM's Alt Nation Channel at #2 and moved up to #1 making it the most played song on Alt Nation last week (7.17.14). We can't believe it!

Describe the songwriting process and why you chose to write all of your own music?

Caleb: The songwriting process is different for each song. It usually starts with me in my house coming up with the bare bones. The bare bones usually being acoustic guitar, vocal melody, and lyrics. After I have the skeleton of the song I will play it for Will and Scott and we will begin to form a more complete picture of the song. Where the songwriting process changes every time is how the song is born. Sometimes it is an accident while in soundcheck that sparks something. Sometimes it is a random lyric while messing around that I end up creating an entire song around. There are times when I write a song in a day and other times where it takes weeks, months, or even years. Regardless of how joyous or frustrating the process can be, the reason we write our own music is because we want to tell our own story.

How has the music scene in Nashville impacted your music?

Scott: Nashville has been primarily known for Country Music in the past, but we are really proud of the indie/alternative scene coming out of the city these days. Bands like Leagues, Kopecky Family Band, Neulore, etc. are a few examples. It's a really collaborative and encouraging group of friends/bands making awesome music. It feels like everyone is on the same team and rooting for each other. That makes it exciting to be a part of something fresh and new.

You were on tour until July 16th. What was that experience like?

Will: Touring is something we love doing. We were out with a great LA band called Bad Suns for about two weeks from July 6-July 17 and had a lot of fun playing great shows to great crowds. It was fun to be out with a band that's got buzz going on and it was perfect timing for us to help boost up the release for our debut record out July 22. We will always love touring and there's nothing more rewarding than playing to people who know your music and people who sing along with you.

What's it like to tour with your best friends?

Will: It's incredible. It makes it a whole lot easier to go out for months at a time and leave home. It does still get hard especially after being in a van for hours at a time and for many days in a row but being best friends means at the end of the day no matter how mad we can get, we love each other and are there for each other.

What's your favorite song on When I Was Younger?

Scott: This is a hard one. I usually tell people my favorite is "Glorious." This song is musically right in our wheelhouse as a band and it came together really naturally when we first arranged it. Caleb's vocal is sung with so much conviction and Will's drums are gigantic. And I love the guitar parts that I get to play on this song. I think it's a favorite for all of us.

What decade do you think was the best time period for music?

Scott: It's a close tie for me on this one. A lot of the older bands that I love got their start in the 60s-70s. A lot of these artists we draw inspiration from are The Beatles, Roy Orbison, Elvis, then Led Zeppelin and Queen in the 70s. These bands are responsible for the birth of rock and roll. We are glad they blazed the trail for bands like us to create our own version of what they started.
