The name came about because I was touring under another band name with the initials MSB for a while. I wanted to keep the MSB in place, as my fan base was familiar with it and had a connection to it. My friend Caryn suggested the name My Silent Bravery and I really thought that embodied what the music was about. To me, it symbolizes inner strength, perseverance, persistence and ability to overcome obstacles. I have been dealing with a sports injury over the years and it is a challenge in my life and I continue to work hard to overcome that obstacle. I now try and inspire others to overcome their obstacles through the messages in my music.
It was a really great feeling and was a very positive sign to me that I was making progress with some of my music goals. I put so much energy and effort into making this album so it was really nice to know that other people were enjoying the work.
I imagine it's different for every individual, but I do think there is something on the album that can appeal to almost anyone. Overall I think it's a pop/rock record, but that there are a lot of different styles and genres combined on the record, designed to appeal to a broader audience. It also still feels cohesive as an album despite the different stylings. Being an independent artist, I don't really need to fit within one genre. I like to call my music "acoustic driven pop rock with a positive message." I'm still a guy who likes to make albums, not just singles. I still like releasing music as an album because that is how I grew up listening to music. I'm a fan of getting a full body of work not just a piece of it. It's like a book, you have multiple chapters and with only one of them you aren't getting the whole picture.
On My Side has a little extra special something for me. It's a song for my friends, fans and family. It's dedicated to them for really being on my side throughout all my musical endeavors. The music business is not a very easy one and this song is a personal thank you to everyone who continues to support me in my journey. Whether it's to come out to a show, buy a CD, comment on Facebook, Retweet on Twitter, it all helps and is appreciated. In addition to my connection with the song and its meaning, it is also for listeners to relate it to their own life, with whatever obstacle they are experiencing and people who have supported them. Specifically, the first verse is about overcoming doubt and the second verse is about manifesting your own destiny, choosing your own path and making it happen. The bridge is a shout out to my immediate family, but I think anyone who listens can still relate it to their own experience and family. The video is also my most personal one to date, letting viewers into my world.
This album takes the singer-songwriter songs from Diamond from Coal and adds electronic ethos and artist collaborations to create an entirely unique experience for MSB fans. It also features one new unreleased song entitled "Get Some" which I am excited for fans to listen to.
I think I came up with idea for the project about 2 or 3 years ago and have been putting it into motion since. I really wanted fans to be able to listen to my music in some different settings than they might normally. For instance, I wanted them to be able to hear a song in a club or want to work out to it at the gym. I think music is really mood related and I wanted fans to have something from MSB when they were in the mood for something really upbeat.
It was really great working with all of these talented people. I think for me it was learning new things about genres of music that I really enjoyed listening to but didn't know as much about technically.
I think they really brought out an edginess and swagger to the songs in a whole new and unique way.
That is a good question and one that I wanted to leave open to interpretation by the viewer from their P.O.V. ; )
I was traveling in Australia and working out in the gym and ended up herniating a couple of discs in my neck. The injury led me to do a lot of soul searching for pain relief which led to me to spirituality, more specifically Kabbalah. As a result of my studies in Kabbalah and working on myself, I realized I wanted to give back to the world at large and music was the vehicle I wanted to use to help spread a positive message. I think everything happens for a reason. My injury was the biggest challenge of my life so far, but from the biggest challenges also come the biggest blessings. The injury helped me recognize it's important to pay it forward and help others. I want to create music that inspires, helps, and motivates others to overcome their challenges.
